Deep Fences and Strong Winds Come Into Play
The Northland College LumberJills picked up a pair of UMAC wins in Aberdeen, S.D. today.  Both games were high scoring as Northland topped Bethany Lutheran College 18-14 and Martin Luther College 15-11.  The games were played in high winds on a field with deep fences.

In the Bethany Lutheran game the LumberJills jumped out to a huge lead scoring 11 runs in the top of the first inning.  The Jills sent fifteen batters to the plate and picked up ten hits in the frame.  Bethany picked up five runs of their own to close the gap in the bottom of the inning.  The Vikings continued to keep the game close, scoring in every inning except for the third.  However the LumberJills continued scoring, never giving up the lead.  The Jills pounded out 21 hits, with every starter getting at least one.  Kayla Totzke (Fr., Appleton, Wis.), starting in place of injured Kylie Garing, rose to the occasion going four for five, all doubles which is a new Northland record and knocking in four.  Others with mulitple hits included Marge Koosmann (Fr., Mellen, Wis.) and Miranda Reichert (Fr., Mosinee, Wis.) who both had three hits and a triple, Chrissy Dvorscak (Sr., Whiting, Ind.) who had three hits, as well as Brittany Schmitt (Jr,, Abbotsford, Wis.), Aurora Albrecht (Sr., Cadott, Wis.) and Asia DeVlaeminck (Jr., Mankato, Minn.) who had two hits apiece.  Brittany Schmitt went the distance and picked up the win for the Jills.

Against Martin Luther the Jills bats were still hot as they ripped 20 hits good for 15 runs.  Once again all the Jills got in the hits column.  This time led by DeVlaeminck and Dvorscak with three each.  Schmitt, Albrecht, Ashleigh Miller (Fr., Ashland, Wis.), Reichert, and Totzke each had two.  Totzke continued her strong day with four more RBI bringing hertotal to the day to eight.  Schmitt picked up the win in relief, throwing 2 1/3 innings allowing one run on one hit.

"Although the big park may have played into some of the extra base hits, we really hit the ball well today," commented Head Coach Steve Wammer, " I was happy with how all our player got into the action.  I was especially happy for Kayla, who although has had limited playing t me this year,  rose to the occasion when called upon."

The LumberJills play UM-Morris and Presentation College tomorow with a chance to clinch second place in the UMAC as they wrap up their conference season.  They will be at home Monday vs. Finlandia University.
