The Northland College LumberJills clinched second place in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) today sweeping a pair of games in Aberdeen, S.D. . The LumberJills topped UM-Morris 9-1 and overwhelmed Presentation College 25-6.

In the opener against Morris the Jills grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Brittany Schmitt (Fr., Abbotsford, Wis.) singled and then scored on an RBI double by Ashleigh Miller (Fr., Ashland, Wis.). Morris tied the game with a run in the top of the second, but the LumberJills opened a big lead when they scored five in the third. Schmitt led off the inning and began a stretch of six straight hits with a single. Aurora Albrecht (Sr., Cadott, Wis.) plated Schmitt with an RBI double. Marge Koosman (Jr., Mellen, Wis.) then followed with an RBI single. Following a double by Miller, Asia DeVlaeminck (Jr., Mankato, Minn.) ripped a two RBI double. Chrissy Dvorscak’s (Sr., Whiting, Ind.) RBI single completed the hit parade in the inning. The Jills picked up a run in the fourth and then in the fifth scored twice more to end the game by the eight run rule. Northland’s 12 hit attack was led by Schmitt, Albrecht, Miller, and DeVleaminck who each had a pair. Schmitt picked up the win, throwing a four hitter.

In the second game of the day Northland got on the board early scoring seven runs in the first inning followed by a team record 18 in the second inning as Presentation starter Dana Chalupsky struggled to find the strike zone. Albrecht and Miranda Reichert (Fr., Abbotsford, Wis.) each had a pair of hits for Northland. Kristin Zimmer (Fr., Laona, Wis.) was the winning pitcher for the LumberJills.
"It was great to finish out the UMAC season with a pair of wins," said Head Coach Steve Wammer, "Although we are always striving for a UMAC championship, second place is a great accomplishment especially when you consider how many new players we had in the line-up."
The Jills will return to action for Senior Day on Monday at LumberJill Field when they host Finlandia University in a doubleheader.
