The Bethany Lutheran Vikings swept the LumberJacks 4-2 and 19-6 in a UMAC double-header this afternoon at LumberJack Field. With the losses the LumberJacks were eliminated from playoff contention. The Vikings cliniched the number two seed in the tournament next weekend. Northland moves to 11-20 overall and 8-12 in the UMAC.
In game one, the Jacks got on the scoreboard first scoring a run in the second after back to back singles by Bryce Szymanski (Jr. Pequot Lake, MN) and Chris Steiner (Sr. Auburn, WA) and a walk by Chad Moore (So. Airdie, AB). Szymanski would score on a sacrifice fly to right by Josh Spiegel (Fr. Wausau, WI). Bethany Lutheran would tie the game up in the top of the third and add two more in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. The Jacks would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth when Szymanski would once again get on base to lead the inning off, this time with a walk and would come around to score on a RBI single by Spiegel. The Vikings would add an insurance run in the 5th and win the game 4-2. B.J. Leach (Fr. Kirkland, WA) and Steiner had two hits apeice for Northland, while Spiegel drove in both LumberJack runs. Szymanski would take the loss on the mound going the distance for the Jacks allowing 10 hits, 4 runs with one walk and one strikeout.
In game two, Northland miscues in the field would prove to be costly late in the game as the Vikings had a ten run 5th inning as they cruised to the 19-6 win. The game was close util the 5th, as the LumberJacks rallied from an early three-run deficit to take a 6-4 lead. The Vikings score 3 runs in the 1st highlighted by a two-run homerun by Nick Johnson. The Jacks would make it 3-2 after scoring twice in the second on fielding errors by the Vikings. In the fourth the Jacks would take the lead scoring three runs with two outs. Dan Salewski (Fr. Wisconsin Rapids, WI) would walk with one out, B.J. Leach singled with two outs to get the rallied started. Matt Tanneberg (Jr. Kennewick, WA) then doubled to right center to bring home Salewski and Leach. Szymanski would bring home Tanneberg with a single down the right field line. The lead would be short lived as the Vikings used Northland errors and walks to score 10 times and take a 14-6 lead. They would add two more in the sixth and three more in the seventh for the 19-6 final. Szymanski would go 3-4 with an RBI, and Tanneberg would finish 1-2 with two RBI's and two runs scored to lead Northland. The Jacks will finish their season on Tuesday May 5th with a non-conference double-header at Finlandia University starting at 2:00 pm (EST).
