Tanneberg had two hits

The Northland College baseball team started the 2010 season off on Monday with two losses in Winter Haven, Florida. The Jacks (0-2) hand their hands full Clark University as they dropped the first two games of their spring trip by scores of 8-3 and 11-2.

Bryce Szymanski (Sr./ Pequot Lakes, Minn.) started game on on the mound for the Jacks and took his first loss of the season after going 1.2 innings and giving up 7 runs on 8 hits. He never got confortable on the hill after giving up a lead off homerun to start the game. Offensively the Jacks had several players record their first collegiate hits. Shane Buckley (Fr./ Iron Bridge, Ont.) got the first hit of the season for Northland when he led off the third inning with line drive to left field. Ryan Johnson (Fr./ Aurora, Ill.) hit a double in his first collegiate at bat, while Peter Aerts (Fr./ Wrightstown, Wis.) recorded a double for his first hit as well.

Cody Carroll (Sr./ Shawano, Wis.) recorded his first hit since coming back to the Jacks after battling injuries and health problems last season. He laced a triple to deep left center to plate the first two runs of the season. He scored one batter later on a Josh Spiegel (Sr./ Wausau, Wis.) single up the middle.

A pair of freshman shut down the cougars offense and gave the LumberJacks a chance. Buckley pitched 2.1 innings while only allowing two hits. He struck out two. Elliott Snow (Fr./ Derby, Kan.) pitched two innings in his collegiate debut. He allowed one hit and no walks, while striking out one.

In game two, the LumberJacks were unable to get a fix on Clark's starting pitcher as he struck out 12. 

The Jacks scored early as Johnson singled in the first. He moved to second on a wild pitch to set up the RBI opportunity for Matt Tanneberg (Sr./ Kennewick, Wash.), who doubled to right center to record his first hit of the season.

One inning later, Jeremy Snow (Sr./ Tucson, Ariz.) drove in a run on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. 

With a 2-0 lead the LumberJacks were unable to throw strikes. After two shutout innings from starter Matt Tanneberg, J. Snow came in two relieve and was unable to get out of the inning. Through the rest of the game Northland relievers combined to give up 11 runs while walking 12.

The Jacks are back in action on Tuesday as they play a double header against Anna Maria College. Game one starts at 3:00 p.m.
