On the opening day of the Upper Midwest Athletic Crossover Northland split a pair of games, falling to Bethany Lutheran College 6-4 while topping Martin Luther College 10-2.
In the Bethany game the LumberJills grabbed an early 1-0 lead off Marge Koosmann's solo shot in the bottom of the second inning. The Vikings however scored two in the fourth on a two run home run. Northland answered back, tying it in the bottom of the frame; however Bethany scored four runs over the next three innings to take a 6-2 lead. In the bottom of the seventh the LumberJills rallied for two runs and had the bases loaded but weren't able to get any more runners across. Koosmann and Asia DeVlaeminck each had a pair of hits including a home run for Northland. Brittany Schmitt was the losing pitcher.
In the Martin Luther game the Jills took a 3-1 lead in the third inning and led 4-2 after five. In the bottom of the sixth Northland plated six runs to end the game by the eight run rule. Sam Bona and DeVlaeminck each had four hits for the LumberJills and Schmitt and Koomann both added a pair each. Schmitt was the winning pitcher allowing just four hits and one earned run.
Northland is now 11-8 in UMAC play.
