The Northland College LumberJills topped UM-Morris 3-1 on day two of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Crossover and earned a spot in the UMAC tournament. The game was scoreless through the first five innings, although the LumberJills had an opportunity to score in the third, but Sam Bona was thrown out at the plate attempting to score on Kylie Garing's single.
Northland got on the board first in the top of the sixth. Amanda Seely led off the inning with a single and moved to second and third on a pair of groundouts. She scored on Brittany Schmitt's two out double to left center. Following a walk to Bona, Schmitt scored on Asia DeVlaeminck's RBI single putting the Jills up 2-0. The LumberJills tacked on another run in the top of the seventh when Ashleigh Miller who led off the inning with a single scored on Becca Ristau's sacrifice fly.
In the bottom the seventh the Cougars lead off runner reached on an error but two batters later was thrown out at the plate on a strong throw from Seely in centerfield to catcher Marge Koosmann. After scoring a run the Cougars had two runners on base but the Schmitt closed out the game with a strikeout and a ground out.
The LumberJills finish the UMAC with a 12-8 record and will play Northwestern College in the opening round of the UMAC tournament in Duluth, Minn. on Friday May 7th.
