For the second year in a row the LumberJacks open their season with a thrilling win in OT over the Finlandia University Lions. Last year, Matt Lamb was the hero and it was the same story this season. Lamb scored the goal in overtime to complete the comeback win for Northland. The win starts the Jacks out 1-0-0 as they head into weekend action at St. Scholastica in a round-robin tournament. The Jacks with play on Saturday against Gustavus at 2:30 p.m. and then play Sunday against Concordia-Moorhead Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
The Lions would grab an early lead when Justin Cayce scored nearly 16 minutes into the 1st half. The Jacks would tie the game at one goal apiece at the 30 minute mark. Newcomer Ryan Pageau scored his first collegiate goal to tie the game at one. The second half would not see any scoring as the Jacks defense shut down the Lions attack. Northland was able to pepper the Finlanida net minder with 11 shots but could not get the game winner in regulation. Lamb would end the game and give the Jacks the win with his goal; junior captain Ben Hughey had the assist on the goal. Matt Larson picked up the win making one save as his defense played very tough. The Jacks will have their home opener on September 14th when they host St. Scholastica.
