Northland College Softball Preview
Meshing a solid base of returners with newcomers who will be counted on to contribute will be the key to success for the 2010 LumberJill softball team. Three of the four infield positions as well as catcher feature returning starters, led by All Conference senior Asia DeVlaeminck at first base. The LumberJills also return experience in the circle with All Conference senior Brittany Schmitt, who picked up 12 UMAC wins last season. “We are fortunate to have a good group of returners in the infield and in the circle,” commented Head Coach Steve Wammer, “their experience and leadership will be an important factor for us.”
Northland will be looking for immediate contributions from freshmen in the outfield and second base. Eight newcomers will compete for primary playing time at those four positions. “How well our freshmen adjust to the college game will likely determine how well we perform in the UMAC.” Noted Wammer. There will also be competition for the second pitching slot. Sophomore Kristin Zimmer who picked up four UMAC wins last season, as well as sophomore Kylie Garing and freshman Devon Shaut will all vie for innings.
