Northland College dropped four softball games this past weekend.   Falling to Bethany Lutheran 5-0 and 7-5 Friday night and to Martin Luther 5-2 and 12-5 Saturday night.  The games were played inside at the Irish Sports Dome due to inclement weather in the Twin Cities.
 
In the Bethany Lutheran double header the LumberJills outhit the Vikings in both games but couldn't come away with a victory.  In the first game Bethany scored five runs on just three hits to claim the 5-0 victory.  Jayna Loy (So., Ontario, Calif.) led the Jills with a pair of hits and also took the hard luck loss in the circle.  In the second game Sam Bona (Sr., Park Forest, Ill.), Faye Koosmann (Fr., Mellen, Wis.) and Loy each had a pair of hits and Kelsey Bodart (Fr., Oconto Falls, Wis.) ripped her first collegiate home run; however the Jills double digit hit attack wasn't able to overcome the timely hitting of the Vikings who held on for a 7-5 victory.
 
“We outhit them, but couldn't string them together.” Said Head Coach Steve Wammer, “We needed one more hit to come at the right time.”
 
On Saturday Martin Luther swept Northland in a doubleheader for the first time since 2003.  In the opener the Jills came out swinging.  Kaitlyn Witthun (Fr., Cambria, Wis.) led off the game with a solo home run, and Bona followed with a double, coming around to score later in the inning, staking Northland to a 2-0 lead.  However Northland wouldn't score again and Martin Luther would score one run each in the second through sixth innings.  Bona and Erin Roembke (Sr., Cedarburg, Wis.) led the Jills with two hits each.  In the nightcap the game was tight until the Vikings exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Steph Wilkinson (Sr., Rochester Hills, Mich.) had a pair of hits including a home run for Northland.
 
“It was a frustrating weekend,” commented Wammer, “there was only one game that we were outhit yet we didn't come out with a victory.  The players will work hard on finals this week and then we will come out ready to go next weekend.”
