Less than two weeks ago the Northland College LumberJill soccer team defeated Bethany Lutheran College in overtime to clinch the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular season title. Today the Vikings returned to Ashland for the UMAC Tournament semifinal game as the #5 seed to take on the the #1 seed LumberJills, the results were the same- LumberJills win in overtime! The LumberJill supporters were out in full force today and the electric crowd was not disappointed.
The 1
st half of the game the Jills came out aggressive and kept the pressure on the Vikings with some great shots that were just near misses, but Northland was just not able to find the back of the net. The half would end in a 0-0 tie. The second half would be a lot of the same with the Jills putting pressure on Bethany Lutheran but unable to score until
Alexandria Fischer would punch one in on a great pass from
Olivia Garceau in the 62
nd minute of the game. Thing were looking good for Northland as they held onto their 1-0 lead until just :04 left in the game, the Vikings Rachel Bitter would shoot one past Northland's keeper
Emily Romuald to tie the game.
Northland is no stranger to overtime in recent weeks, and overtime has been good to them. This time was no different, with less than three minutes left in the extra period, Northland's
Heather Jensen would score on with a great assist from
Kaiya Voldberg to win the game 2-1 and advance to the UMAC Tournament Championship.
"Today's win was the result of a whole team effort, everyone worked hard and stepped up to the challenge," said LumberJill Head Coach
Justin Sexton. "This team has worked hard and done their job, and they deserved this win today, and it was a big day for the LumberJill Soccer program."
With this win, the LumberJills will host the UMAC Tournament Champion ship against the UM-Morris Cougars who beat St. Scholastica in a shootout today. The game will be held here in Ashland at the Ponzio Stadium on Northland College's Campus at 1:00pm on Saturday November 5
